Google search stories

Found something kind of neat using Google and YouTube. You can make video stories using Google Search Stories
You can make a story like "Parisian Love"  video the one shown during the Super Bowl.  You just think up seven searches, add music and viola' you have a video. Try it. Once you have a story you like, upload it to YouTube and embed it on your blog.

Fair use and copyright

One of the topics we are going to look at is the issue of fair use and copyright. It is important to know what the laws are so you know when and whether you can use another person's material. Here are a few videos to get you started. One is by Videomaker Magazine. The other one is posted on School Tube. I will also post some links at the bottom of this post to give you more info about the concept of copyright and plagiarism.

Here are some links to more information on copyright.

Masher

We are going to use Masher to make a public service video. Today I would like you to log onto Masher, create an account and try it out. Then, go to the Google doc that was shared with you and decide on a topic. If you don't see one you like, you can add your own. You can do this with a partner, if you'd like. It has to be a partner that you haven't collaborated with so far this semester. We are going to mix it up and Mash it up :) You will be using the Flip cameras to take some of your own video.  You will be working on this again on Friday. Have fun!

Web 2.0 & Screen Casts

We are going to explore more Web 2.0 tools that are available. You will need to pick a tool that you can make a screencast showing how the tool works. To find some Web 2.0 tools try http://www.go2web20.net/. The tools are sorted by category so you are sure to find something that interests you. Once you have explored your tool and are comfortable with how it works, then you will make a screen cast video illustrating the basics to get started with your tool. You can use either http://screencast-o-matic.com/ or http://www.techsmith.com/jing/ to make your video. This project will allow us to look at a wide variety of sites in a short amount of time.

Blog assignments

OK,  I have looked at most of your blogs. If you got an email from me, that means that there was some sort of problem. You will need to add a post after every class discussing what you learned each day. You can also add a post whenever you feel like it. All your posts don't have to necessary have to be specific to this class, but once a week please blog about what you are learning and doing in this class. I want you to get comfortable with the idea of blogging. If you have something to say...blog it! If you find something cool you want to share....blog it! You can embed video in your blogs, too. I also want you to comment on at least two of your classmates' blogs each week. Please don't comment on the same two people each week, mix it up :) Remember, whatever you post can be read by the world. Remember your audience.

Diigo research

Now that you have found something to use as a basis for some research, goo ahead an start researching. You need to think of your searching skills that we talked about last week. One of the points of this assignment is to start using Diigo as a tool. You might want to look to see it there is a group in Diigo about your topic. Then you could begin to network with others who share your interest and see some of the things they are bookmarking.

Monday is a catch up day.

By now you should have a Gmail account, blog, Diigo account, and set up Alerts for your email. You should also have set up Google Reader to feed the class blog entries into 1 place so they are easier to keep track of. Some of you have started following other people in Diigo. Feel free to look around Diigo to see if there are other people who have interests similar to yours. Diigo is a great start in developing your Personal Learning Network. You also need to be working on your presentation with your groups. It is to be done in Google docs. Feel free to chat online with the rest of your group if you don't sit by your group members.

We have had a lot going on in class, so today we just need to get caught up. I have graded all the posts and comments. If you need to get caught up on those, please do so. Since we are just getting started, I will still grade them. This week, however, the blog entries need to be done before the end of the week or you won't get points for them. Also, if you need to finish the presentations you started last week, please do so. Take time to talk with your group so you know how you will make your presentation.

Check your Alerts today. Please find one that you can blog about and make a blog post. I will grade all blog posts and COMMENTS after Friday so make sure you get it done before then :)

Evaluating web resources part 2

When you are done watching this video, continue finishing the presentation with your group. Your assignment for this week is to reflect on the activities we have done in class and think about how you might use them. Which ones seem to be more valuable to you? This post should have at least 5 sentences.

Evaluating web resources

During the last class we started discussing ways to evaluate web sites. With your group, do some research on criteria and standards you need to use when evaluating whether a web site is a good resource or not. Put together a presentation in Google and be prepared to talk to the class about what you have learned. Please start using Diigo to keep track of your resources.
You might try this site to get started:
